Judith is a Professional Member of the Craft Potters' Association and of the
Guild of Sussex Craftsmen. Recent work consists of wheel-thrown bowls and
vases using either porcelain or a coarse clay body. These are fired by the
'Raku' method, in which the pot is withdrawn from the red-hot kiln with long
tongs whilst the glaze is still molten and smothered in sawdust, or other
organic matter, before being plunged into cold water, which seems to
contradict all conventional wisdom.

The process is very dramatic with plenty of flame, acrid smoke, steam, and a
high breakage level. Glazes containing copper oxide undergo partial
'reduction' producing exciting colour variations from emerald and turquoise
to pink and metallic copper, whilst the clay body is darkened by absorption
of carbon from the resulting combustion.

The ware which successfully survives the intense thermal shock is porous,
with a glaze often crazed and scarred by tong marks, but each piece is
completely unique and can sometimes be beautiful.
